b. 1989, Bay Area
Oakland-based visual artist and cinematographer

H. Scott Roth creates digital works that dissolve the boundary between the seen and the unseen, inviting viewers to linger until the image begins to move, breathe, and reveal dimensions that were always present yet just out of focus.

Trained in film at California State University, Long Beach, and later in art and sound design in Hamburg, Germany, Roth’s dedicated digital practice took root during his time in Europe from 2011–2012. There, amid the city’s layered history and diffuse northern light, he began treating Photoshop not as a mere tool but as a generative engine—systematically pushing filters, layers, and algorithms to conjure optical effects that felt vividly alive.

Returning to California in 2012 and settling in Oakland, Roth has maintained a dual path: freelance cinematography and video production by day, an intensive digital studio practice by night.

From 2013 he began translating his still “soft op” explorations into time-based works, crafting animated GIFs that extend illusory motion into gentle, looping cycles. These pieces further soften the hard edges of classic op art through subtle gradients, fluid transitions, restrained yet vibrant color shifts, and meticulously calibrated perceptual ambiguities—yielding an experience that feels immersive and quietly hypnotic, akin to gazing into a slow-moving aurora or the lingering afterimage of a dream.

At the heart of Roth’s practice is a sustained inquiry into perception itself: how vision constructs reality, how subtle cues can suggest concealed layers or alternate dimensions, and how digital space can evoke expanded states of awareness long associated with psychedelic experience.

From 2022 onward Roth has integrated AI-assisted experimentation, employing machine learning as a collaborator to generate novel perceptual fields and unexpected gradient behaviors.

Blending cinematic intuition with rigorous digital craft, Roth has been minting and exhibiting NFT series on Ethereum since 2020 and Tezos since 2021, bringing his quietly radical explorations of seeing itself to collectors and viewers worldwide.
